1. The theme for WABI SABI 2017 is “road”!
It focused on the spirituality unique to Japanese people of “mastering one's own path,” such as calligraphy, tea ceremony, flower arrangement, and kendo, and strongly appealed to the many Japanese fans who visited the venue for their skillful techniques of expression and passionate soul that each artist had faced and pursued.

2016 “WABI SABI” Event Report

In 2016, 234,852 visitors were recorded. As befits the name of the world's largest trade fair for people who love Japanese culture, it showed overwhelming success in terms of both its ability to attract visitors and its scale.

The theme for the 2016 edition of the traditional and regional culture pavilion “WABI SABI” produced by Japan Promotion is “wish.” The pavilion decorations were compared to the Tanabata Festival in Japan, and prayers for world peace and happiness were included.

High-level exhibitions full of appeal from traditional Japanese culture, various traditional performing arts stages, and regional information dissemination and appeal promotion, starting with the opening of a “Kumamoto Charity Booth” calling for reconstruction support from the Kumamoto earthquake, were also actively carried out, and it was a great success.

WABI SABI 2016 Highlight Video

Here are the highlights of 4 intense days where traditional Japanese culture captivated the world.

“Regional Characters Become Bridges for Cultural Promotion”

Susaki City, Kochi Prefecture

It's probably the biggest response from the events I've attended so far. The local character “Shinjo-kun” from Susaki City is surrounded by many fans, and the cheering is just amazing. “Kawaii (cute)!” The term is well established in France, isn't it? I'm already very busy taking photos and dealing with interviews everywhere I go. The expansion into Paris has been reported in many domestic media, and it's a really good PR. If I get a chance, I'd like to take you next year and see everyone in France again. I intend to prepare various things, such as introducing specialty products that we are proud of and fun tourist spots so that people will fall in love with Susaki City even more.

“Realize overseas calligraphy needs”

JFK (Japan Fudemoji Classroom)

They were very pleased with the calligraphy workshop. Let everyone's eyes twinkle at this first experience. I'm happy that they are also holding the works they bought for me with great care. It is said that people are moving away from writing in Japan, but I was reminded of the possibility of future calligraphy. Besides, I think there are opportunities all over the world. I was convinced of the expansion of the field of activity.

“Using Hello Kitty as a bearer of Japanese culture”

Sanrio Co., Ltd.

When you hear “tradition,” there is an image that the threshold is high, but I want people to incorporate Japan's world-class techniques and sense of beauty into everyday life, so I'm proposing traditional Hello Kitty crafts. Everyone, including Hello Kitty fans, has picked up the work, and they are also very enthusiastic about questions about techniques and usage. I came into contact with the direction of French people's tastes and interests, and there was a definite response. I hope Hello Kitty can become an entity that creates opportunities for people to come into contact with traditional Japanese culture.

“Japanese fashion will become more interesting in the world”

Gotomi Fashion Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (Street Japanesque)

We are freely incorporating modern design fabrics and proposing yukata with a new taste. This one is for men, but the pattern is cute, so it's popular with women. I want stylish Parisians to try to dress in a slightly different way, such as putting it on just over their clothes. I would like to bring out the global potential of yukata more and more.

“Every time you participate, new possibilities open up”

Miho (calligrapher)

Writing isn't just black and white; it's an amazingly interesting world. I'm currently focusing on stage performances, and I'm devising ways so that people can enjoy it, such as performing with Japanese musical instruments and having the audience participate. Great excitement every time! The fact that the number of visitors continues to increase year by year also motivates me to take on the challenge.

“A dynamic experience that makes the world much more familiar”

Haruki Risakura (calligrapher)

Every year, they mainly perform on the traditional performing arts stage. We are exhibiting at our booth for the first time this year! At first, I was confused about grasping the customer flow, but I was able to quickly grasp the pace. Calligraphy fans and postcards are selling well and are getting a good response. It's also a perfect place to hang out with fans after the stage. Recommended for artists who are close to their customers and want to be active in the world.
