160,000 visitors, a major festival of publishing culture
Livre Paris was held at Port de Versailles from 2017/3/24 (Friday) to 27 (Monday).
In 2016, the number of visitors dropped drastically due to the effects of the terrorist attacks in Paris, but this year, the number of visitors increased to 160,000, and the original bustle of “France's largest mega book fair” was restored. 221 organizations, including publishers, libraries, internet companies, universities, and agencies, etc., exhibited, and as many as 3,000 famous artists from all genres from around the world gathered (Livre Paris announcement). Also, President Hollande attended this year. This successful performance for the first time in a year has become a hot topic of conversation in the media all over France.

Disseminating Japanese artists to the global media

In Japan Promotion, in addition to a collection of French poems by Japanese poets, a special issue of Japanese painters, etc. of “UNIVERS DES ARTS,” one of the three major French art magazines, will be introduced. I saw Japanese-style covers and book reviews, and many people bought them.
The opening party on the first day was also crowded with many guests. High interest in Japanese culture and art was received from media institutions with cultural transmission power, such as France's representative art magazines “Technikart” and “UNIVERS DES ARTS”, France télévisions (French national broadcasting station), publishing houses belonging to the Beaux-Arts National School, PARIS MUSEES, publishers belonging to the National Museum of Fine Arts, BNF, etc., and in addition to requests for coverage of Japanese artists, various We have received many offers of cooperation.

Expanding diverse exchanges

In France, many people traditionally like poetry, and Japanese haiku and tanka books, which are short poetry literature, are selling well at local bookstores. When I talked to Mohsen Farsani , who was eagerly looking at the collection of poems, it seems that he composed haiku in French and English, and even published a book. They say their dream is to publish a collection of poems in Japan someday.
Also, at a nearby booth, you can see young artist Melehior surrounded by fans at an autograph session. On the 2nd day of the exhibition, while picking up a special issue on Japanese painters, he told us, “Actually, I'm studying Japanese art right now.” While involved in an art project on paper and light, they became interested, and they are currently looking for Japanese artists who work on Japanese paper and calligraphy. There is a possibility that a wonderful collaboration project between him and Japanese artists will be realized in the near future.
In addition to this, there were also big guests such as Catherine Garnier, famous as a French translator of “The Tale of Genji,” and Emmanuel Macron (Emmanuel Macron), who is seen as the next president of France. The book was presented with the kindness of the author, and a fulfilling exchange unfolded.

Soon, Japan will be invited again

When the event was held in 2012 (name “Salon de Livre” at the time), 22 Japanese people, including Nobel Prize writers Kenzaburo Oe, Kaori Eguni, and Moto Hagio, were invited and became a hot topic, but locally, it is expected that Japan will be selected again in recent years.
This is due to the fact that interest in Japanese culture is deepening year by year, in addition to subculture such as comics and games, as well as haiku, tanka, tea ceremony, incense, and martial arts.
As a transmission center with influence around the world, we will continue to expand our exhibition activities at Livre Paris in order to convey the appeal of diverse Japanese culture.
