The art fair “VOLTA New York,” which brought together 48 galleries from around the world, was held for 5 days from 2023/5/17 to 21. Four Japanese artists also participated in the booth operated by Japan Promotion. I will report on how many art fans gathered.

5 days to color New York, the center of art
The venue for “VOLTA New York” is southwest of Manhattan, New York. It was held at the convention center “Metropolitan Pavilion” in the Chelsea area, which is dotted with galleries and is said to be the birthplace of the latest art. This art fair is described as a “friendly price range” and “less rigid atmosphere” among art fairs held in New York, and it is filled with an atmosphere where you can feel more familiar with art and enjoy interacting with artists.

A place to connect artists and art fans from around the world
“VOLTA” focuses on international gallery exhibitions, and a total of 48 galleries from 18 countries from America, Europe, West Asia, Africa, North America, Asia, etc. gathered during this exhibition.
What shines on the white board that divides each booth is a number of unique works selected by each gallery. Combining art and science, there are themes that look to the future, and there are also works that are contemporary and reminiscent of history, bringing diverse perspectives to viewers.
There was an overflow of guests who came in vigorously as soon as the doors opened, and international conversation flew around. It was truly an art festival that connected artists and art fans.

Japanese art stuck in the hearts of New Yorkers
Our corporate booth, which was attended by 4 Japanese artists, was also crowded with many visitors.
Works with diverse expressions have been introduced, such as Akiko Sasagawa, who draws the spirit that lives in Japanese people with fine mandalas; Hage Masakata, who embodies people's inner spirituality by putting on a brush; Hirai Tomoyuki, who uses various materials such as not only oil paint but also gauze to express unspeakable “emotion,” and Hoshino Tomotoshi, who uses innovative techniques while following tradition and shows off fresh Yamato paintings.
While many collectors visited the venue and looked at the works as if they were eating in, there were also works that went on sale from day one, and we heard voices from subsequent visitors regretting that they had already been sold.

Charity event “Fashion Fights Cancer” will also be held
At the venue, on the first day of the fair, an open event was held to guests and VIPs ahead of general admission, and a charity event was held with VOLTA and “Fashion Fights Cancer: FFC,” an official non-profit partner, on the 2nd day. Urban cartoon artist Andy Das performed a live painting, and each of the 6 galleries exhibiting at the fair donated art works to be exhibited at auction. Six famous designers in the art fashion industry nominated by FFC unveiled new costumes inspired by donated works.

Expectations are growing for the future of VOLTA NY
“VOLTA” was born in 2005 in Basel, Switzerland to connect art lovers and collectors with contemporary art. After that, it rapidly evolved into a platform that supports international galleries, and among them, “VOLTA New York” was launched in 2008.
VOLTA New York is being held in the New York/Chelsea district, which has now established an immovable position as one of the world's leading areas where artists and creators gather. From the appearance of people excited to encounter new art, it is no wonder they explain that VOLTA's 18 years have “been consistently on an upward trajectory in the market.” Who will join us on this road next?
