2nd Contemporary Art Exhibition Bringing Ukiyo-e to Life! “THE WORLD OF UKIYO-E” will be held soon

The Japan Promotion Association will hold “THE WORLD OF UKIYO-E” on the 1st floor of the Ueno Royal Museum Main Building from 2021/4/24 (Sat) to 25 (Sun).

Relive “Ukiyo” from 200 years ago

This exhibition is an attempt to bring out the function and artistry of Ukiyo-e as a medium with a contemporary artistic approach and provide a new lifestyle and cultural experience that transcends time.

The exhibition of real woodblock prints of representative masterpieces by Katsushika Hokusai and Kitagawa Utamaro, which is rarely seen at Ukiyo-e exhibitions, is one of the major highlights of this exhibition. Instead of familiar printed materials using ink or data, you can see the texture of multicolor prints up close.
Furthermore, while introducing the authentic world of Ukiyo-e, such as exhibitions of Hokusai comics, which are the roots of current anime and manga culture, and demonstrations of the Ukiyo-e production process by craftsmen who have inherited orthodox techniques, etc., we will create an interface space connecting the world depicted in Ukiyo-e with installations using materials such as Japanese paper, ink, light, and video with motifs of these works.
We are not separated floating herbs, and enjoy a forgiving and unique Ukiyo-e experience, where you can feel popular culture and people's activities in the Edo period and now, the feeling that loneliness that is sometimes even excessive loosens and is certainly connected to past times, and may not even be a “follow up” experience.

The long-awaited sequel to an exhibition that was well received in 2019

This is the second exhibition following the “3D Ukiyo-e Exhibition,” which was produced and held by the art team KIRIE in 2019. The exhibition, which interlaced pictures, calligraphy, modeling, and physical expression to create KIRIE's unique, glossy and beautiful worldview, brought fresh emotion and an unforgettable art experience to many visitors.

“Nature of Women (Nature of Women)” is expressed using various methods using Ukiyo-e beauty paintings as motifs. Innovative and bold installations by female artists active around the world recorded full attendance at each session.

Japan Promotion strongly supports the activities of Japanese artists at home and abroad, and we sincerely hope that art of various genres will spread widely and deeply as culture.
