Artexpo New York 2026 Report | Global Attention on Japanese Art in NYC

In April 2026, the "Artexpo New York 2026" art fair was held at Pier 36, located on the Manhattan waterfront in New York, USA.

This historic event, which began in 1978, marked its 49th edition this year. Our organization secured a prime booth location near the entrance at this four-day fair, which brought together over 200 galleries, artists, and publishers from across the US and around the world. We showcased the works of Japanese artists to the art-savvy people of New York.

A Bustling Art Fair

Four-Day Art Fair Report | New York's Unique Atmosphere and Visitors

Thursday, the opening day of the four-day art celebration, saw the highest number of visitors. Exhibiting artists and related parties welcomed attendees, fostering new encounters and interactions throughout the venue.

Friday, the second day, was a typically quiet day, allowing for a more serene time to engage with the artworks as the initial hustle and bustle subsided. In contrast, Saturday and Sunday saw a continuous stream of visitors from the moment the doors opened, with people constantly moving through all areas. Throughout the day, we observed many visitors with a clear purpose, actively seeking out art. Purchase inquiries significantly increased from Saturday, and we even saw families decide to buy a piece from our organization's booth the moment they laid eyes on it.

It was a weekend where we truly felt New York's unique and profound appreciation for art.

People Exploring the Spacious Venue

The Unique Atmosphere Created by the Waterfront Venue

Pier 36, the venue, is a waterfront location slightly removed from central Manhattan. As a place where only those "seeking art" gather, the high level of purpose among visitors was evident everywhere.

Inside the venue, background music sometimes enhanced the atmosphere, and alcoholic beverages were occasionally served to visitors in the evenings. The energetic vibe of casually enjoying art was distinctive, and throughout the fair, a New York-like vibrancy enlivened the entire venue.

Visitors with a Deep Understanding of Art

Most visitors were New York residents. The age range was predominantly 30s and above, with many attendees in their 60s and 70s. Affluent visitors, including lawyers, finance professionals, and business managers, were looking for artworks to display in their homes.

While visitors came from various nationalities, the presence of Russian and Eastern European attendees was particularly noticeable. Many thoroughly appreciated the artworks and articulated their impressions and interpretations, leading to numerous instances where conversations with visitors inspired the artists themselves.

There were high-quality encounters, unique to New York, where art is deeply rooted in daily life.

Visitors Who Did More Than Just "Look"

Reactions to Japanese Artists' Works

Three Artists Selected for Discoveries Collection

The "Discoveries Collection" is a certification program awarded to notable artworks priced under $3,000, carefully selected by the organizer's curation team. It serves as a recommendation to visiting collectors, signaling "this work is a must-see." Selected pieces are marked with a sticker in the venue, significantly boosting their visibility.

Three artworks from our organization's booth were also selected for the Discoveries Collection, proving that their appeal resonates even in New York.

Love at First Sight, Leading to an Immediate Purchase

On Saturday, a family of four, who had come specifically to find art, decided to purchase a piece from our organization's booth the moment they saw it. The lack of hesitation in that "this is it" moment highlighted the maturity of New York's art-buying culture.

For all those who purchased works, including other pieces, each had their own reasons for choosing the artwork and thoughts on where they would display it.

It was a four-day event where we fully experienced the true essence of an art fair as a place connecting artworks with people, and people with people.

Praised as "a very unique work, blending modern and traditional elements."
