What is “Space Meets Art”

Japan Promotion, an incorporated association, manages domestic and international events and exhibitions with the aim of supporting the global activities of those responsible for the “now” of the Japanese arts and culture world. As part of that, this project “Space Meets Art” started in September 2021. A number of attractive and powerful works by Japanese artists are introduced in Shibuya, the epicenter of fashion.

Exhibition space

The venue for this project is Shibuya Stream Excel Hotel Tokyu (Shibuya-ku, Tokyo), which is also known as a mecca for creative workers. A modern and stylish bar lounge and guest rooms with a vintage modern concept. The atmosphere is heartwarming, inspired by the image of a “space where creators live.”

This time, which is the fourth installment of “Space Meets Art,” I would like to introduce the world of “string hanging art,” an art created from a single thread by artist Aya Kubota.

A delicate work created by multiplying meticulous design and calculation.
Beautiful motifs spun out of each fine thread adorn the Shibuya Stream Excel Hotel Tokyu bar space.

While being an artist, Mr. Bota also has a side as a photojournalist. I feel a sense of warmth that makes my heart feel somewhat relieved from my rich experiences and the many works created in the spacious nature of Nagano Prefecture, where I am based.

The winter season is about to begin. With family, friends, and loved ones.
Please enjoy the art exhibition “Lines and Shapes”.

■Profile

[Kubota Aya]

String art artist. Based in Hakuba Village (Nagano Prefecture), he creates string-on art, drawing geometric patterns with thread. The thread used for expression was arrived at after trial and error, such as silk thread and trying plant dyeing myself. In addition to her creative activities as an artist, she is also engaged in activities to convey the fun of string kake art as a lecturer. He also had the face of a photojournalist, flew around the world with a camera in his hand, and covered the World Cup and Winter Olympics. The range of activities from “static” to “dynamic” is not limited to the artist, such as hosting an international adventure race competition in 2018.

★ During the exhibition, kits are being sold at the entrance of “Shibuya Stream Excel Hotel Tokyu” where you can enjoy string art at home.
